Snoring Treatment in Dubai

Persistent or loud snoring can point to a problem in the nose, throat or upper airway. An ENT assessment with Dr. Fateh Alsalem finds the likely cause, so treatment is based on what is actually happening in your airway.

Why It Happens

What causes snoring?

Snoring happens when airflow through the upper airway makes the surrounding tissues vibrate during sleep. The cause varies a lot from person to person.

The throat

  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Enlarged adenoids
  • Changes in the soft palate
  • Tongue position during sleep

Lifestyle & sleep

  • Sleeping position
  • Alcohol or sedatives
  • Weight-related factors
  • Airway anatomy

Important

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

A sleep-related breathing disorder where the upper airway repeatedly becomes blocked or narrowed during sleep. Snoring alone does not mean you have sleep apnea, but the signs on the right should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

  • Loud snoring
  • Pauses in breathing seen by others
  • Gasping or choking
  • Poor-quality sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • If sleep apnea is suspected, a sleep study or further sleep assessment may be recommended.
ENT Causes

Can the nose or tonsils cause snoring?

Nasal problems

A blocked nose makes nasal breathing harder and can lead to mouth breathing during sleep. Possible causes include:

  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Enlarged turbinates
  • Nasal polyps and congestion
  • Allergies

Treating a nasal problem may help selected patients. See functional rhinoplasty and sinus surgery.

Enlarged tonsils

Enlarged tonsils reduce the space in the throat and may contribute to snoring or sleep-related breathing problems. This is especially relevant in children, but can also affect adults.

An ENT specialist can assess whether treatment may be appropriate. See our ENT services.

Treatment

Does everyone who snores need surgery?

No. Surgery is only one option and isn't right for many patients. The first step is finding the likely cause and whether treatment is needed.

Step 1

Assessment

How often you snore, breathing pauses, nasal breathing, sleep quality and daytime symptoms, plus a nose and throat examination.

Step 2

Simple measures

Lifestyle changes and treatment of nasal congestion or allergies where appropriate.

Step 3

Sleep evaluation

Further sleep assessment if symptoms suggest sleep apnea.

Step 4

Surgery, if suitable

Addressing a specific cause such as nasal obstruction or enlarged tonsils. There is no single operation that suits everyone.

Self-Care

What can I do about snoring?

Depending on the cause, these general measures may help. If snoring continues, an ENT assessment can look for an underlying cause.

Keep a healthy sleep routine
Sleep on your side where appropriate
Manage nasal congestion
Avoid alcohol close to bedtime
Review sleep-affecting medicines with your doctor
Get assessed if snoring persists

FAQ

Snoring questions

Is loud snoring a sign of sleep apnea?

Not necessarily. Loud snoring can occur without sleep apnea, but snoring with breathing pauses, choking, gasping or significant daytime sleepiness should be medically assessed.

Can an ENT specialist treat snoring?

An ENT specialist can assess whether problems with the nose, throat, tonsils or upper airway are contributing to snoring and discuss appropriate treatment options.

Can nasal surgery stop snoring?

It may help selected patients when significant nasal obstruction contributes to their symptoms. However, snoring can have several causes.

Does removing tonsils stop snoring?

If enlarged tonsils are contributing to airway obstruction, tonsil surgery may help selected patients. The decision requires an individual assessment.

Do I need a sleep study?

A sleep study may be recommended when symptoms suggest obstructive sleep apnea or another sleep-related breathing disorder.

Is snoring surgery suitable for everyone?

No. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, anatomy, symptoms and overall health.
